im pretty sure the itsy bitsy spider is long gone cuz [Aug. 14th, 2006||01:14 pm]
[I'm feelin | apprehensive]
[listenin' to |Blue Man Group- Audio]

its been rainin purty good all day. apparently, as i am learning, it is almost always raining here. with that comes cold too. it feels like winter in houston, only it is only mid-august. im going to freeze when it actually gets cold.

yesterday we aimed for IKEA, but it was closed, so we just drove around delft for a while and went through den haag a little i think on the way home. it was pretty, but we were on those little roads beside the canals that, as i said, are for people who actually know where they are going. we ended up backing up and turning around a few times.

school starts wednesday, but despite the fact that i went to orientation, im not feeling up to it at all. im not sure how they expect me to successfully get to school, then an assembly, and somehow find my homeroom and classes. if i got lost in st agnes which is just two hallways stacked one on top another, im thinking its inevitable for me to get lost here. for all i know ill end up in the middle of the elementary school somehow. the newly kinda scarily colored floors might help thought. as long as im on a yellow floor i think ill be alright. im assuming everything will work out, but im always a bit paranoid.

our sea shipment is apparently supposed to have been in country as of last wednesday, but it has to go through customs which is said to take anywhere from 1-3 weeks. so in theory, we could get it this week which would be fantastic, but highly unlikely. more possible to get it next week though, which is ok with me too. sooner the better though. besides that not too much is going on. rain and school.

B is for beaches and breathalyzers [Jul. 30th, 2006||10:32 pm]
[I'm feelin | tired]
[listenin' to |clocks by coldplay]

tonight was pretty interesting/eventful considering its a sunday when everything is closed up. since everything is closed as i said, we decided to drive around. we went around to look at my school again, and then up to the beach- which is only about a 5/10 minute drive from our house actually. i didnt realize it was that close- but i figured i didnt, hence why i wanted to go. it has been rainy and so hardly anyone was there. apparently it is usually a giant pain to drive down there, but there was lots and lots of parking. i dont know if it was because its sunday, or cuz it was a kinda yucky day without much sun.

in any case, we came back and ate at a pannekoeken huis (pancake house- whoot i spelled that correctly the first time) which was really good. it occures to me that i only ate breakfast food today- 2 bagels and a pancake with ham, egg, and cheese on it. oh well, it was all good. apparently they believe in pancakes, eggs, fried foods (especially potatoes), potatoes themselves- mashed and otherwise, and mayo on french fries (which we've decided doesnt add anything to the fries).

on the way home we decided to go the long way and drive around to haarlem and back before going home. so we went down this really pretty road with lots of big houses and farm/pasture land. there is also alot of livestock here- cows, horses, goats, sheepses, etc etc, and flowers too. so anyways, we got into haarlem and dad found his way to the bus station, and then the church, and around to his appartment, etc etc. and we were coming down a little street one street over from the red light district, and all of a sudden there were a bunch of police there. so when we got up there one of them told us to pull over, and another came by and informed us that they were doing alcohol testing. so dad ended up having to do a random breathalyzer test, which he passed of course. though it was a good day for him to decide to drink iced tea with dinner lol.

mac n cheese and ranch dressing! [Jul. 24th, 2006||11:30 pm]
[I'm feelin | tired]
[listenin' to |the song stuck in my head- i just know its by Chili Peppers]

so i am rather impressed and perhaps proud that we were able to find both mac and cheese and ranch dressing at the grocerie store today. we had found oreos last time we went there. guess we dont need velveeta as much afterall.

our air shipment came in this morning- good thing i got up to go to the bathroom at 8 and looked out the window, or its likely we would have not noticed they were there. i was able to give mom a head start before they rang the bell lol. easier for her than me though- considering we both were in our pjs, and hey- its hard answering the door from the third floor! anywho, mom packed a bunch of stuff for air, but all i had was the rest of my normal clothing. im thinking im going to have to buy all new school supplies and stuff since our sea shipment wont get here by school start.

the petses are supposed to finally get here tomorrow morning- they are to be on the airplane right now. i feel sorry for their mental status. but i guess we'll see tomorrow.

before that though we have to go get mine and mom's residency pass- which we got some photos for today. apparently it doesnt matter if you are in europe or not, passport pictures still suck.

i think thats about it for now. im rather tired and have to get up in the morning. its later than i planned to be up. g'night world.

non-existing u-turns [Jul. 18th, 2006||11:30 pm]
[current location |Wassenaar]

today we woke up relatively early to go to the US consulate in the middle of amsterdam to get some papers noterized for the sale of our house. the parking in amsterdam sucks. hell, the whole driving experience- especially when one is not experienced in such experiences- sucks. so even though we had directions, and a small bundle of maps, we managed to cleverly get lost along the way numerous times. somehow, never mind that the netherlands has about 10 times the amound of signs as the US, when you need em they arent around. anyways, after nearly running over a few people, almost being ran into by a couple trains, and hoping a curb to go around a bus, we realized that the U-turn we were supposed to take did not, in fact, seem to be in existence. in an attempt to end our adventure there, we opted to just park and walk. we finally found it after asking someone (very uncharacteristic of dad might i add). after that it was just a bunch of hassle and we were out of there. that was when we learned that we really only parked about a block or so away, and had walked the long way around.

what i learned: 1) the belt i was wearing should never be worn when going through a metal detecter. or about 5 in this case. 2) next time, we are taking the train.

that was our excitement for the morning. other than that there isnt too much news. it is unusually warm here though- about mid 80s+ which would be fine if we had ac. i think its about the same temp here as it has been in Houston, just without the ac. apparently this is the first time in 20, 30 years (i cant remember what the guy said) that there have been 2 heat waves in one summer. just thought that was an interesting little tid-bit for yall.

(no subject) [Jul. 13th, 2006||05:44 pm]
[current location |Haarlem]
[I'm feelin | hungry]

i guess ill start with monday and go through the week:

monday was the day for last minute frenzies, which actually wasnt as bad as it could have been- we nearly got everything done. then we packed up and took a plane for 10 hours and ended up in amsterdam the next day. the plane ride was alright since me and mom were in business class, albeit, it was too long and i only slept about 15 minutes total.

tuesday we were picked up by a driver guy who dropped dad off to get a temporary car and drove us over, with dad trailing behind, to our new house to meet up with the realtor to get the keys and such. they had to explain all the windows and lights and utilities etc to us. the house is alot smaller than you would think, even stretched over 3 floors. if you split a normal US room in half, you'd prolly get something that resembles these rooms. it also smells bad and has very steep stairs which are worse than we are used to, but better than most here. anyways, so then dad drove us over to his apartment where we have been staying the past few days. i was up for 30 somethin hours before i got to sleep on the too-short couch.

wednesday dad went to work while me and mom slept in a bit while not effectively overcomeing jetlag. we went out to supper and then to the house to grab a few things we had left there, and drive by the school. after that we came home and crashed.

today is about the same as wednesday, but its only about 6pm right now.

everything- alot of little things- are so much different here than the US, but hopefully we will get used to everything in due time. until then, it has only been 3 days and i already have picked up a handful of dutch words. not enough to string a sentence together, but little words here and there.

i think thats about it for now- not much has really happened yet. since we wont see our furniture for another 6 weeks at least, we are going to rent some furniture, which should mean we will be staying in our house by tomorrow night. then the doggy and kitty should get here early next week.

anywho, so now that i successfully actually got a new username and such, i should start posting on here soon so check back whenever. btw, im thinking im going to try to make all my posts anonymous comments only for a few reasons, so if you comment, just put your name at the end so i know who you are.
